If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in the Twin Cities, the IRS treats that pickup date as your donation date for this tax year—even if the vehicle sells later. With Revive Auto’s St. Paul car-donation program, you can lock in your 2024 deduction in one fast path: spend two minutes on a simple form or phone call, get a call back within hours, and schedule a free tow that can often arrive the same day or next business day in the metro.
Revive Auto partners with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446), to turn your unwanted car into support for people who are blind or visually impaired. Year-end tax deduction facts
Dec 31 pickup = this year’s tax donation
For IRS purposes, your donation date is when the charity takes possession of the vehicle—your pickup date. If your car is picked up on or before December 31, it applies to this tax year, even if the sale happens later.
Form 1098-C for larger vehicle donations
When your donated vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale. This form shows the gross sale price, which supports your deduction if you itemize.
Deduction generally equals sale price
In most cases, your allowable federal deduction is up to the gross sale price of the vehicle reported on Form 1098-C. Special rules can apply if the charity keeps and materially uses the vehicle rather than selling it.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To claim a car-donation tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you claim the standard deduction, you generally cannot add a separate charitable vehicle deduction.
30-day receipt requirement
The charity must send your acknowledgment / Form 1098-C within 30 days of the vehicle’s sale or significant use. Keep this with your records; your tax preparer will use it to support your return in case of IRS questions.
